Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (245g) 100% pure pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup (200g) packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: Melt unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the foam subsides and the butter smells nutty (3-5 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan and line with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
  4. To the cooled brown butter, add pumpkin puree, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Gently fold together with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips, reserving a small handful for topping.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan, smooth the top, and sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs. Tent with foil if browning too quickly after 30 minutes.
  9. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then lift out using parchment paper and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Ensure eggs are at room temperature to prevent the butter from seizing. Do not use pumpkin pie filling; use 100% pure pumpkin puree. For best results, let the bread sit overnight to allow spices to meld. If using a glass pan, reduce oven temperature by 25°F.
