Crispy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket – Easy Halloween Appetizer

Crispy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket - featured image

These crispy mummy pigs in a blanket use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls for a shatteringly crisp texture. Wrapped to look like tiny mummies with mustard-dot eyes, they’re the perfect spooky and delicious Halloween appetizer that disappears every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 24 small cocktail sausages or lit’l smokies
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Mustard or ketchup, for eyes
  • Optional: Everything bagel seasoning or flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Use a rolling pin to gently smooth out the creases to about 1/8-inch thick.
  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the pastry lengthwise into strips about 1/2-inch wide (about 12 to 14 strips per sheet).
  4. Take one strip of pastry and wrap it around a cocktail sausage, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Leave small gaps between the wraps so the sausage peeks through. Leave a little space at the top for the ‘face.’ Don’t wrap too tightly.
  5. Arrange the wrapped mummies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one.
  6. Brush each mummy lightly with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt or everything bagel seasoning if using.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and crispy.
  8. Let the mummies cool for 2-3 minutes on the baking sheet. Using a toothpick or the tip of a knife, dab a tiny dot of mustard or ketchup on each one for eyes (two dots per mummy at the top).
  9. Serve immediately while warm and crispy.

Notes

For best results, thaw puff pastry in the fridge overnight. Don’t wrap the pastry too tightly or it won’t puff properly. Leftover mummies can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes or in an air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes. Unbaked mummies can be frozen for up to 3 months and baked from frozen at 400°F for 15-18 minutes.
