A simple, forgiving dessert featuring tender Honeycrisp apples topped with a crunchy, buttery oat streusel. Ready in under 45 minutes with pantry staples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced into thin wedges
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Optional: 1/4 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Let sit for a few minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold cubed butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the oat streusel topping over the apples and press down lightly.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender.
  7. Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken.

Notes

Use cold butter for a crumbly topping. Honeycrisp apples are recommended as they hold their shape. If using frozen apples, thaw and pat dry to prevent excess moisture. For a gluten-free version, use GF flour and certified GF oats. For dairy-free, use vegan butter or coconut oil.
