These creamy crockpot mashed potatoes are the perfect make-ahead side dish for feeding a crowd. They free up stovetop space and deliver a silky, rich texture every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 cup water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sour cream, full fat
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup warm milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into uniform 1-inch chunks. Rinse in cold water to remove excess starch, then drain well.
  2. Place the drained potatoes in a 6 to 7-quart slow cooker. Add the water or broth, salt, pepper, and minced garlic (if using). Stir to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  4. Once the potatoes are cooked, drain any excess liquid (if any) and transfer the potatoes to a large mixing bowl.
  5. Add the cubed butter and cream cheese to the hot potatoes. Mash with a potato masher until mostly smooth.
  6. Add the sour cream and warm milk or heavy cream. Continue mashing or use a hand mixer on low speed until the potatoes are creamy and smooth. Be careful not to overmix.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
  8. Serve immediately, or keep warm in the slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting for up to 2 hours.

Notes

For dairy-free, use plant-based butter and unsweetened cashew cream instead of milk. Cream cheese can be replaced with dairy-free yogurt for tang. Yukon Gold potatoes are preferred for their buttery flavor and waxy texture; Russets may become gluey if overcooked.
