This isn’t just another chili recipe. It’s the one you’ll come back to again and again, especially when the weather turns cold or you need a little comfort. The combination of tender sweet potatoes, lean turkey, and a smoky, slightly sweet broth is just next-level.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground turkey (93/7 works great)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced (about 1 ½ cups)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into ½-inch pieces (about 3 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes (San Marzano recommended)
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (or dairy-free alternative, for garnish)
  • Sour cream or plain Greek yogurt (for garnish)
  • Sliced avocado (for garnish)
  • Lime wedges (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Turkey: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess liquid if needed.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion to the skillet with the turkey and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Build the Flavor: Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and pepper over the turkey mixture. Stir and cook for about 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  4. Layer the Slow Cooker: Transfer the turkey mixture to a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Add the cubed sweet potatoes, diced red bell pepper, drained black beans, drained kidney beans, crushed tomatoes, fire-roasted diced tomatoes, and chicken broth.
  5. Stir and Cook: Stir everything to combine, ensuring the sweet potatoes are mostly submerged. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until sweet potatoes are tender.
  6. Taste and Adjust: Before serving, taste the chili and adjust seasoning with more salt, cumin, or a squeeze of lime juice as desired.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Ladle the chili into bowls and top with your favorite garnishes such as Greek yogurt, shredded cheddar, fresh cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.

Notes

For a thicker chili, mash about half a cup of the cooked sweet potatoes against the side of the slow cooker and stir back in. This chili freezes well for up to 3 months. If using an Instant Pot, use sauté function, then pressure cook on high for 15 minutes with natural release.
