Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 2 cups bourbon or whiskey
  • 1 cup spiced rum
  • 2 cups ginger beer
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2–3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 2 apples, sliced into thin rounds
  • 2 oranges, sliced into thin wheels
  • Ice ring or large ice block (made with apple cider)

Instructions

  1. Make the ice ring the night before: Fill a bundt pan halfway with apple cider. Arrange a few apple slices, orange wheels, and star anise in the liquid. Freeze until solid, then add more cider to fill the pan and freeze completely.
  2. Prepare your garnishes: Slice 2 apples and 2 oranges into thin rounds. Set aside a few slices for the ice ring and reserve the rest for the punch bowl.
  3. Mix the base: In a large pitcher, combine the gallon of apple cider, 2 cups bourbon, 1 cup spiced rum, 2 cups ginger beer, 1 cup fresh orange juice, and 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice. Stir gently with a wooden spoon. Taste and add 2-3 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup if needed.
  4. Add the whole spices: Drop 4 cinnamon sticks, 6 star anise pods, and 1 teaspoon of whole cloves into the pitcher. Let them sit for at least 5 minutes before serving to infuse their flavor.
  5. Assemble the punch bowl: Pour the mixed punch into your punch bowl or beverage dispenser. Carefully add the ice ring. Arrange the remaining apple and orange slices on top of the punch.
  6. Serve immediately: Place the punch bowl in a central location with a ladle and cups nearby. Add a cinnamon stick to each cup for an extra touch of flair.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon and spiced rum and add an extra cup of apple cider and a cup of ginger ale. The ice ring is key to preventing dilution; use apple cider instead of water. If the punch tastes too strong, add a splash of plain apple cider or ginger ale. If too sweet, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
